Description

NEM 100 - Orientation to Nuclear Emergency Management course introduces learners to the foundational concepts, structures, and procedures that support nuclear emergency preparedness in Ontario. Through six integrated lessons, learners will explore the risks of radiological and nuclear emergencies, and identify key nuclear facilities in Ontario and nearby U.S. states. The course provides an overview of Ontario's legal and regulatory framework, the 2025 Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan (PNERP), and the roles of nuclear partners and emergency organizations. Learners will gain insight into how decisions are made during a nuclear emergency, how protective actions are implemented, and how emergency planning zones are used to minimize exposure. The course also addresses the human and societal impacts of nuclear emergencies, including public alerting, psychosocial support, and community care considerations. Finally, learners will examine the coordination of scientific and operational response efforts, including the roles of specialized teams and communication tools between emergency operations centres and partner agencies. By the end of the course, learners will be well-equipped to understand Ontario's nuclear emergency management system and recognize how their role contributes to an effective and coordinated response.
